Greenmarket Square to get its groove back on First Thursday

The City of Cape Town invites Capetonians and visitors for an evening of Jazz on the Greenmarket Square on Thursday, 5 November 2020. In partnership with the Cape Town Central City Improvement District(CCID), the City will host a free music event on the square as part of the Cape Town CBD revitalisation programme.

Cape Town’s own music maestro Don Vino Prins will provide entertainment with his saxophone and a supporting line-up of talented local artists will keep the patrons on their feet.   

‘Greenmarket Square is in the heart of the CBD and has been a key location for events within the city, playing host to many high-profile events over the years. The City has developed five workstreams to rejuvenate the CBD economy and is in the process of implementing this strategy. It is vital to jumpstart the events industry as it supports thousands of jobs and we will continue to offer support through these events and other initiatives,’ said Executive Mayor Dan Plato.

‘This will be the second in a series of events at the historic square, aimed at bringing life back to the area and revitalising the economy of the central business district. The Events Department will host other similar events in the CBD over the coming weeks, in collaboration with fellow City departments.

‘It is important for the City to work with business to reverse the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying lockdown. We believe providing opportunities like this event -  coinciding with First Thursdays - where people can spend money on local businesses, can assist in igniting economic growth to ensure we save more businesses and jobs,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith.

Thursday’s event starts at 16:00 and ends at 21:00.

The City would like to urge members of the public who are planning to attend to be mindful of COVID-19 mitigation and screening processes.
 
No one will be allowed into the event footprint without a mask.  It is also important that masks be kept on at all times during the event.
